ASTA Successfully Reopens Turkey’s $4.6 Million Market for U.S. Corn Seed
- On October 29, 2026
ASTA, working closely alongside USDA, successfully reopened Turkey’s corn seed market, valued at approximately $4.6 million. In recent months, several ASTA members were unable to export corn seed due to new phytosanitary requirements related to Spodoptera frugiperda (fall armyworm), which required maize seed to originate from a pest-free country or pest-free area. Following coordinated efforts between ASTA and USDA, Turkey agreed to remove this requirement for maize seed and grain imports globally. The change is expected to be formally notified through the WTO SPS notification process.
This achievement highlights the importance of strong industry-government partnerships in removing unjustified trade barriers and reinforces ASTA’s role in protecting and expanding international market access for the U.S. seed industry.
