USTR Exempts Planting Seeds from Section 301 Forced Labor Tariffs

On July 24, the Office of the U.S. Trade Representative (USTR) delivered the results of the Section 301 forced labor investigation. In its findings and final verdict, USTR exempted planting seeds and other agricultural products from tariffs in 60 economies. Following the announcement, ASTA issued a statement highlighting the importance of this tariff relief to the U.S. seed industry. 

“Yesterday’s USTR announcement was an important step in recognizing the unique nature of seed research and production,” said Andy LaVigne, President and CEO, ASTA. “We extend our appreciation to the Administration for acknowledging the vital role that trade plays in delivering seed innovation to U.S. farmers. Tariff relief under these investigations, and others, will help ensure that U.S. seed companies can conduct necessary steps of seed production that cannot be relocated and remain economically competitive in a global industry. The U.S. seed sector remains a committed partner in combating forced labor, and in supporting the innovation pipeline that empowers American farmers to lead the world in agricultural exports.”
