ASTA Continues to Track Bill Filings in States

  • On March 25, 2021

States are continuing to file bills, with some very creative expectations. Here are a few that have caught ASTA’s attention:

  • California AB 866 – The California Seed Law requires the Secretary of Food and Agriculture to maintain a properly equipped laboratory for examining and testing seeds. If passed, the bill would add to this requirement to maintain a properly equipped laboratory for testing seeds and authorize the secretary to approve laboratories to conduct germination and purity tests under certain circumstances.
  • Maine LD 822 – This bill would add seeds to the definition of “necessities,” thereby prohibiting profiteering during supply disruptions and “basic necessities” in the law governing municipal general assistance.
  • Illinois SB 170 & West Virginia 3235 — Similar in intent, the bills would provide for the right to cultivate a vegetable garden, and would permit state and local regulation. Defines “vegetable garden”.
