During the inaugural Policy and Leadership Development Conference in June, several monumental decisions were announced to expand seed-industry educational opportunities. ASTA introduced a new student membership category; the American Seed Research Foundation and the National Council of Commercial Plant Breeders announced the creation of a new organization called the Seed Science Foundation; and ASTA signed an MOU with National FFA. These exciting initiatives will help raise the level of awareness about the seed industry, and related research and career opportunities.

In order to maximize the current programs and develop additional material for students, ASTA will re-organize its Management Skills and Future Seed Executives (FuSE) Committees. The Management Skills Committee will become the Leadership, Education and Development (LEAD) Committee and FuSE will retain its name. LEAD will be responsible for all continuing education and development, including the continuation of the leadership webinar series. The Committee will work in conjunction with FuSE to evaluate its existing programs and to develop additional opportunities for new industry professionals. FuSE will re-focus on student activities including the development of materials and programming for ASTA’s new Student Membership program.
