On May 19, the Canadian Food Inspection Agency published for consultation proposed guidance intended to clarify whether a plant is subject to pre-market review prior to environmental release. The impetus of the proposal is plants developed using gene editing methods but will be impactful for plants developed using any breeding method. The proposed guidance set the following criteria for when pre-market approval is needed, such as when it is a new crop species, contains foreign DNA, or negatively impacts the environment. The comment period closes September 16, 2021.
