Kenya Lifts Ban on Cultivation and Importation of GM Crops

  • On October 12, 2022

On October 3, the Kenyan government lifted the ban on the cultivation of genetically modified (GM) crops and the importation of food crops and animal feeds derived from GM crops. The ban has been in place since November 2012. The Cabinet-level decision cited the need to enhance food security and responsiveness to drought. Previously, Kenya had approved the commercialization of Bt cotton in 2019.
