Bipartisan Legislation Introduced to Boost Soil Health and Align Crop Insurance with Risk Mitigation Practices

  • On May 24, 2023

On May 18, Reps. Sean Casten (IL-06), Elissa Slotkin (MI-07), and Senator Sherrod Brown (D-OH) introduced the bipartisan, bicameral Conservation Opportunity and Voluntary Environment Resilience Program (COVER) Act with original co-sponsor Rep. Mike Bost (IL-12). The bill would provide a $5/acre crop insurance discount to farmers who plant cover crops to incentivize the soil health practice, building on the federal Pandemic Cover Crop Program.

ASTA, along with more than 120 organizations, has voiced support for the legislation. For more information, view the press release here.
