ASTA Host PBI Meetings in Japan

  • On September 2, 2026

On July 28-30, ASTA staff and members traveled to Japan to host a seminar and conduct a series of meetings focused on Plant Breeding Innovation (PBI). Hosted in collaboration with key Japanese partners, the Seminar on International Applications and Notification Case of Genome Editing Technology brought together Japanese biotechnology developers, government regulators, and seed sector stakeholders to discuss the latest advancements in plant breeding technologies and the opportunities they present for agriculture. Throughout the discussions, ASTA representatives emphasized the importance of science-based, risk-proportionate regulatory frameworks for products developed through genome editing, highlighting how transparent and predictable policies can encourage innovation while maintaining public confidence and safety.

This engagement comes at a pivotal time as Japan continues to refine and clarify its regulatory approach to genome edited products. ASTA’s outreach efforts are intended to support ongoing dialogue between industry and policymakers, share international experiences, and promote regulatory environments that enable access to innovative agricultural technologies.
