ASTA recently participated in the Asia and Pacific Seed Alliance (APSA) inaugural Plant Breeding Innovation (PBI) Consultation in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, joining regional and global stakeholders to advance science-based regulatory approaches for PBI across the Asia-Pacific region.Â
The consultation involved the participation of government officials from 14 countries across the Asia Pacific region, including representatives from the Food Standards Australia, New Zealand, Japan, Korea, the Philippines, Thailand, and India.Â
During the event, ASTA shared insights on the North America regulatory experience and emphasized the importance of predictable, transparent, and proportionate oversight for new breeding techniques. Country representatives presented briefings on national PBI R&D and policy developments. The event also featured collaborative sessions on regulatory coherence and alignment strategies, reinforcing ASTA’s commitment to supporting international cooperation and innovation-friendly policies that benefit farmers, consumers, and the global seed sector. Â
ASTA will continue working with APSA to support regional harmonization efforts and ensure U.S. seed sector perspectives are well represented in policy discussions.
