SUMMARY:ISU Seed Conditioning and Quality Evaluation Workshops
DESCRIPTION:ISU is once again offering a series of workshops on seed conditioning and quality testing procedures this summer.  The workshop dates are rapidly approaching\, so we are sending this brief reminder in the event either you or a co-worker might be interested in the program.  The 2015 workshop schedule is listed below and on the registration website listed below.  These are small group sessions that feature a mix of classroom and “hands on” equipment operation in our pilot plant at the ISU Seed Science Center. \n            Food Grade Bean Conditioning………………………. May 11-14\n             Color Sorting – Satake (ScanMaster II)……………….. June 1-2\n             Color Sorting – Satake (Evolution)……………………… June 3-4 \n            Color Sorting – Buhler Sortex (Z+)……………………. June 9-10 \n            Seed Corn Conditioning…………………………………. June 15-18\n             Seed Treatment……………………………………………. June 24-25\n             Soybean & Small Grain Seed Conditioning…………… July 6-9 \nSpecialty Seed Conditioning………………………………. July 14-16\n             Soybean & Small Grain Seed Conditioning……….. July 20-23\n             Gravity Separation……………………………………………… July 28\n             Gravity Separation……………………………………………… July 30\n             Seed Corn Conditioning…………………………………. August 3-6\n             Seed Corn / Soybean Quality Testing…………… August 11-13 \nThere are several program revisions for 2015.  The food grade bean program is being offered again this year and has been extended to four days to accommodate expanded program content.  The past Satake programs have been duplicate sessions intended to help minimize group size but the second session will focus primarily on their new Evolution machines. \nRoutine workshop registration is handled by our staff in Conference Planning and Management.  Additional details\, including a PDF version of the workshop brochure and on-line registration can be found on the ISU Extension web site at http://www.extension.iastate.edu/registration/events/conferences/seedscience/.  Routine registration questions may be directed to Extension using the following contact information:\n\n Iowa State University\n Registration Services \n1601 Golden Aspen Drive\, Suite 110 \nAmes\, IA  50010 \nPhone: 515-294-6222 \nFax:      515-294-6223 \nEmail: registrations@iastate.edu \n\nClick here for the brochure

SUMMARY:Soil and Water Conservation Society 70th International Annual Conference
DESCRIPTION:Coming Home to Conservation: Putting Science into Practice \nThe 70th Annual Soil and Water Conservation Society (SWCS) Conference will provide a forum to celebrate past conservation accomplishments as well as share and promote science-based knowledge on critical\, current issues facing soil\, water\, and environmental sustainability. \nWe will meet this year in North Carolina\, the home state of Hugh Hammond Bennett\, which provides a unique combination of conservation history and southern hospitality. Already an active soil scientist in the years prior to the Dust Bowl\, Bennett witnessed first-hand the social and environmental devastation of significant erosion.  His nation called on him to help stem the tide of its worst environmental disaster by implementing soil saving practices in the Great Plains and beyond.  Hugh Hammond Bennett later helped found the Soil and Water Conservation Society and led the charge of identifying and applying sound science in pursuit of conserving soil and water resources. With the same mission today\, we face even greater natural resource challenges in the midst of climate change and increasing populations. The path paved by Bennett’s efforts and example gives us a solid foundation\, and we must strive to continually improve the use and preservation of resources as we build a sustainable future. \nOne way we are moving forward on current environmental challenges is by incorporating the former NIFA National Water Conference into the SWCS Annual Conference\, which will increase collaborative opportunities for Land-Grant based scientists and educators engaged in water issues. SWCS welcomes this addition to our already diverse audience and the enhancement it will provide to all conference participants.
